The clinical success of a bone-anchored implant is controlled by many factors such as implant shape, chemical composition, mechanical and surface properties. The surface properties (e.g. charge, wettability and roughness) are considered to be important parameters for the biological acceptance of the biomaterial, whereas the bulk properties control the biomechanical behaviour. For implants designed to be used in load-bearing applications in the skeletal system, the biomaterial should preferably integrate into bone tissue for a long lasting function. Lack of integration between the implant and bone increases the risk of micromotions, infections, soft tissue encapsulation, which all reduces the survival rate of the implant and makes revision surgery necessary. Coatings and surface modifications can be used to tailor properties of implant surfaces, and further improve the potential bone bonding and bone in-growth, compared to unmodified surfaces. A biomimetic method, developed by Kokubo, can be used to prepare a hydroxyapatite coating on to titanium substrates. The method is based on a solution based process where the compositions of the soaking medium and thus the formed coatings can be controlled. In this thesis, titanium (oxide) surfaces have been tailored via deposition of ion substituted hydroxyapatite coatings. Biologically relevant ions like strontium, silicon and fluoride were incorporated into apatite coatings. The substrates included well-defined rutile single crystals, as well as poly-crystalline titanium oxide surfaces and experimental Ti implants. The results showed that incorporation of substitute ions alters the morphology, crystallinity, composition and dissolution rates of apatite coatings. The in vivo effects of the ion substituted apatite coatings were also studied. The results showed that the ion substituted apatite coatings have good biocompatibility and can promote early bone formation. Carl Lindahl, Uppsala University,

The biomimetic apatite-cefalotin coatings on modified titanium.
Dental implant failure often occurs due to oral bacterial infection. The aim of this study was to demonstrate that antibiotic efficacy could be enhanced with modified titanium. First, the titanium was modified by anodization and heat-treatment. Then, a biomimetic coating process was completed in two steps. Surface characterization was performed with scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersi...

Electrochemical depositions of calcium phosphate (Ca-P) film on NiTi alloy in concentrated simulated body flood (SBF×5) were carried out by cathodic polarization. The Ca-P layer was successfully deposited on Ni-Ti alloy substrate under 10mA/cm2 current density for 2 hours at room temperature. Then, in order to investigate the bioactivity of the pre-calcified samples, they were immersed in SBF f...

Arrayed Ti6Al4V nanotubes (TNT) coated with hydroxyapatite (HA) were synthesized via electrochemical anodization method. Paracetamol was loaded onto TNT-HA electrode. Effects of anodization, nanotube formation and hydroxyapatite deposition on sorption and release of the drug were investigated. Saturation time of paracetamol on the anodized samples was 30% shorter than the hydroxyapatite-coated ...

PURPOSE The surface properties of dental implants have been considered directly related to the success of the osseointegrated interface. Hydroxyapatite (HA)-coated implants promote a bioactive surface because they facilitate cellular migration and bone growth, resulting in a faster osseointegration. MATERIALS AND METHODS This study analyzed and compared 2 different implant surfaces: a group c...
متن کاملBiomimetic Hydroxyapatite Deposition on Titanium Oxide Surfaces for Biomedical Application
Titanium is widely used as material for permanent implants in orthopedic and dental applications. It is well known that Ti shows a mechanically stable interface towards bone (osseointegration). The good biological properties are due to the beneficial properties of the native oxide (TiO2) that forms on Ti when exposed to oxygen. The native titanium oxide on Ti is usually amorphous and very thin,...
